Matthew’s drive for mechanics

For Matthew Bennett, an Australian Apprenticeship was not just an education experience; it was a path to a career in an industry he is greatly passionate about – automotive mechanics.

He demonstrated this passion while working on the school solar cycle challenge from Year 8 to Year 12, and through winning a state award for science and technology.

From the tiny town of Quorn, 40 kms north of Port Augusta in South Australia, Matthew started his Certificate III in Heavy Road Transport immediately after completing his Year 12 studies.

“Everything I’ve learnt and accomplished during my Australian Apprenticeship has been great,” Matthew said.

“I’ve been given opportunities not many people are offered and I’ve learned a lot through those experiences.”

His host employer, Butler’s Mechanical Services, describes the 23-year-old as a stand out example of maturity with leadership capability beyond his years.

The young mechanic already has an impressive resume.

In 2011, he was named MTA Group Training Scheme’s Apprentice of the Year.

In the following year, he was selected to be part of the Holden Racing Team at the Clipsal 500 before attending Apprentice Employment Network’s Today’s Skills: Tomorrow’s Leaders program with 20 other Australian Apprentices.
