Information for Career Advisors

We provide essential insights into apprenticeships and training to guide career counsellors in supporting young careers.

What is a Group Training Organisation?

Group Training is a structured training and employment model where a Group Training Organisation (GTO) employs apprentices and trainees under an Apprenticeship/Traineeship Training Contract and places them with host employers.

GTOs are large employers of Apprentices and Trainees in South Australia.

What Apprenticeships & Traineeships are available?

Our members are GTOs which cover a wide range of Apprenticeships and Traineeships and operate throughout the whole state. Apprenticeships and Traineeships are available across Automotive, Construction, Electrical, Plumbing, Metal Fabrication, Mechanical Engineering, Hospitality, Office Administration, IT, Early Childhood Care, Civil Construction and many more industry sectors.

What is the Application / Selection process?

All our members select for vacancies throughout the year. The criteria applicants need to meet, and the process used vary from one Group Training Organisation to another – interested career seekers will need to contact the relevant GTO for details depending on their chosen career pathway.

Generally, however applicants will need to have successfully completed at least Year 11. Most members will ask applicants to undertake an aptitude test relevant to the vocation they are interested in. Many will also interview applicants, and some will contact participants in pre-vocational courses.

Are Australian School Based Apprenticeships (ASBA) available through a Group Training Organisation (GTO)?

Yes, individuals can undertake an ASBA through a GTO. Many AEN SA members offer this form of career pathway for eligible students. We recommend contacting the GTO directly to discuss the options available.
